Seven kilometers south of Frankfurt Oder lies Lossow. A place steeped in history. Its name? Derived from the Lossow family. Their first documented mention? 1290. Otto de Lossowe. Imagine that. A name echoing through centuries.

Lossow’s story unfolds slowly. A quiet village. In 1328 its existence is officially confirmed. But Lossow is more than just a date on a page. It lived through tumultuous times. The Thirty Years’ War. Brutal plundering. Destruction at the hands of Wallenstein’s troops and the Swedes. The village burned. The inhabitants suffered. Yet Lossow persevered.

The 18th century witnessed the rebuilding of the village church. A beacon of hope. A testament to resilience. It wasn’t without further trials though. The Seven Years’ War brought more suffering. Russian soldiers plundered the church in 1759. Imagine the fear. The desperation. The loss.

But the villagers rebuilt. They repaired the church after lightning struck in 1885. They replaced its bells. Lossow’s spirit remained unbroken. World War II brought further devastation. By 1945 35% of the village was destroyed. The church burned again. A cruel blow. Yet again the villagers found strength. They began to rebuild. Slowly painstakingly they restored their village. Farmers donated wood. Funding finally came. The church tower got a roof. The walls were partly repaired. Today Lossow’s church stands as a poignant reminder of this history. A ruin yes. But a ruin with a story to tell.

Beyond the church lies another fascinating piece of Lossow’s history. The Burgwall. An ancient fortified settlement. Its roots reaching back to 1000 BC to 400 BC. A powerful reminder of the village’s deep roots. Archaeological finds unearthed during the construction of the Berlin Breslau railway line in 1844 further showcase Lossow’s rich past. Artifacts from the Bronze and Iron Ages and the Slavic period. Lossow’s past is tangible. It’s under your feet.

Lossow is more than just a collection of historical events. It’s a place of innovation. In 1810 Karl Heinrich Neumann a local preacher began a school improvement project. A visionary. He and the cantor and teacher Menzel reformed the teaching methods. They embraced the latest Pestalozzian principles. They even held teacher training courses. In 1815 Neumann opened a teacher seminar in Lossow. A testament to Lossow’s forward-thinking community.

Lossow today. It is a blend of past and present. A testament to human spirit and resilience. Small and medium-sized businesses thrive here. The village lies peacefully beside the B 112 road. Its firefighters continue a tradition dating back to 1811. Even its location at the edge of the Oder-Spree region hints at the richness of its connection to the broader landscape. Lossow is worth exploring. Its story lingers.
