The story of Ballyfermot Community Church isn’t just one of construction. It’s a story of perseverance. It began not in grand style. It started humbly in a former Dublin Corporation paint depot. Father Donal O’Scannaill bought this shed around 1950 for a mere £200. Imagine. A paint depot. The beginnings of a place of worship. This wasn’t just a building. It was a soup kitchen nicknamed ‘The Stew House’. The Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul served the needy. A youth club flourished within those walls. It was a true community hub. Long before the beautiful church we see today.

Then came the dream of a proper church. A grander vision. The community rallied. Eamonn MacThomáis a Dublin historian played a vital role. He organized door-to-door collections. Fundraising events included social evenings. Dances and rounds of ‘Take Your Pick!’ a popular radio game of the time. But the most remarkable fundraising event was ‘Buy a Block’. This church is truly built by the community for the community.

Robinson Keefe and Devine designed the church. John Hughes & Son built it. Construction began in May 1951. The final cost was £68000. Another £10000 went towards mahogany seats. It could seat 1980 people. A magnificent space. A reflection of Ballyfermot’s rapid growth. The church provided a focal point a centre for this burgeoning community.

Father Donal O’Scannaill captured the essence of this transition. He wrote about the joy of moving the Blessed Sacrament from the ‘Painters Hut’ to the new church. A poignant moment in Ballyfermot’s history. This church remains a symbol of faith resilience and community. It’s a place where stories continue to unfold. It’s a building filled with hope.
