In 1960, a seed was planted. This seed was the idea for a university, a place of learning and growth. This seed would eventually blossom into what we now know as California State University, Dominguez Hills, or Pueblo Dominguez U as it’s sometimes called. Pueblo Dominguez U wasn’t always the vibrant hub it is today. Its story begins on a historic piece of land, part of the Rancho San Pedro. This was the first private land grant in Southern California, awarded to Juan José Dominguez in 1784. The university’s 346 acres are a direct link to this rich history, a reminder of the Dominguez family’s legacy. The university first opened its doors in 1965, not on this sprawling campus, but in a temporary location. Classes were held at the California Federal Savings Bank in Rolling Hills Estates. Imagine those first students, eager for knowledge, learning in a bank. A few years later, following the Watts Rebellion, Governor Pat Brown recognized the need for accessible education in the South Bay area. The Dominguez Hills location was chosen, bringing opportunity to underserved communities. The campus officially opened in 1968, designed by the renowned architect A. Quincy Jones. He envisioned a campus that blended seamlessly with the rolling hills and mild climate. Jones’s modernist influence is still visible today. Look around and you’ll see the broad green lawns, the concrete walkways, and the abundance of eucalyptus and coral trees. The buildings themselves, with their exposed concrete waffle slab construction, are a testament to his vision. Pueblo Dominguez U has always been a champion of diversity. It boasts one of the most diverse student bodies in the entire CSU system, with a large percentage of first-generation college students. This commitment to inclusivity is a cornerstone of the university’s identity. Pueblo Dominguez U offers a wide array of academic programs, from bachelor’s and master’s degrees to teaching credentials. It has become a beacon of learning, empowering students to thrive in today’s world.
