Across the Schuylkill River stretches the George C. Platt Bridge. It’s a steel giant, a through truss bridge officially known as the George C. Platt Memorial Bridge. This bridge isn’t just a way to get across the river. It carries a piece of Philadelphia’s history and a tribute to a Civil War hero. The George C. Platt Bridge opened in 1951. It replaced an older swing bridge further south along Penrose Ferry Road. Originally, this bridge was called the Penrose Avenue Bridge. It was renamed in 1979 to honor George Crawford Platt. He was a Civil War hero who lived from 1842 to 1912. Today, the George C. Platt Bridge is vital for Philadelphia. It carries Pennsylvania Route 291, also known as Penrose Avenue, over the Schuylkill River in Southwest Philadelphia. Approximately 56,000 vehicles cross the George C. Platt Bridge every day. The bridge has seen its share of dramatic moments. In 1967, a dividing wall was added to separate traffic. Before that, there were over 30 head-on collisions between 1964 and 1967. The George C. Platt Bridge also stood as a silent witness to the devastating 1975 Philadelphia Gulf refinery fire. The bridge passes directly over the site of that former refinery. During the fire, explosions cracked a smokestack next to the bridge. Officials feared the stack would collapse onto the bridge. They closed it for several hours. Eight firefighters tragically lost their lives battling the flames. The George C. Platt Bridge also holds a story of art and loss. Two bronze reliefs of George C. Platt once adorned the bridge. They were commissioned by Platt’s great-great-grandson and installed in 1986. Sadly, both were stolen, one in 1987 and the other later. Despite a reward offered in 2002, they remain missing. More recently, the George C. Platt Bridge underwent a major renovation. The $42.8 million project, started in 2011, aimed to extend the bridge’s lifespan. The work included painting, resurfacing, and structural repairs. During the three-year project, traffic was reduced to one lane in each direction. The George C. Platt Bridge stands as a testament to engineering and a tribute to a local hero. It carries not only thousands of vehicles daily but also a rich tapestry of stories woven into the fabric of Philadelphia’s history.
