The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin is a landmark with over two centuries of history. King Frederick William II commissioned it. He wanted a grand end to the Unter den Linden boulevard. Carl Gotthard Langhans the Elder designed it. He was inspired by the Propylaea of the Athenian Acropolis. Construction took place between 1788 and 1791. This makes the Brandenburg Gate one of Germany’s earliest examples of neo-classical architecture.

Look up and you’ll see the Quadriga. Johann Gottfried Schadow designed this chariot pulled by four horses. It was added in 1793. The Quadriga is meant to symbolize peace entering Berlin. Victoria, the goddess of victory, holds the reins.

But the Quadriga has had quite an eventful life. After Prussia’s defeat in 1806, Napoleon took it to Paris as war booty. Following Napoleon’s abdication in 1814, it returned to its rightful place. The Brandenburg Gate and Quadriga suffered severe damage during World War II. A copy replaced the original sculpture in 1956 during reconstruction.

During the Cold War, the Brandenburg Gate stood in a restricted area. The Berlin Wall went up in 1961. It was inaccessible to both East and West Berliners. After the Wall fell in 1989, the gate became a symbol of reunification. On December 22, 1989, over 100,000 people celebrated its opening. Ironically, the celebrations damaged the Quadriga so badly it needed restoration.

Located on Pariser Platz, the Brandenburg Gate is in the heart of Berlin. The square is lined with important buildings. These include the Hotel Adlon Kempinski and the US Embassy.
