A 36-meter-tall rocket pierces the Chemnitz sky. It’s the centerpiece of the Kosmonautenzentrum “Sigmund Jähn”. This isn’t just a museum. It’s a portal to space exploration.

The Kosmonautenzentrum “Sigmund Jähn” opened in 1964. It was a gift from the East German trade union. Its purpose was to inspire children and young people. The rocket is a replica of the Vostok. Yuri Gagarin made history in this very model. He was the first human in space.

The center’s name changed in 1979. It became the Kosmonautenzentrum “Sigmund Jähn”. Sigmund Jähn was the first German astronaut. He visited the center in 1980. He even visited again many times. Many other famous cosmonauts visited too. Andriyan Nikolayev was the first. Valery Bykovsky visited multiple times as well. He is even an honorary citizen of Chemnitz.

Children can take tests. These tests assess their vision reaction time and balance. If they pass they earn a simulated spaceflight. Children from the AG Stammpersonal staff run the simulation. The tests and simulation happen in the rocket.

In 2001 the Chemnitz Youth Office transferred ownership. The Solaris Förderzentrum took over. They continued the center’s mission. They renovated and improved the facilities over the years. They even added a high ropes course in 2007.

The Kosmonautenzentrum “Sigmund Jähn” isn’t just about the past. It’s about the future. It continues to inspire young minds. They might become the next generation of astronauts. It holds numerous events and workshops. It has a modern simulation room. It is a place where dreams take flight. A place to remember the past. A place to imagine the future.

The Kosmonautenzentrum “Sigmund Jähn” is more than a building. It’s a legacy. It’s a testament to human ambition. It’s a symbol of Chemnitz’s commitment to science and education. It’s a must-see for any visitor to Chemnitz.
