This isn’t just any softball field. It’s a place steeped in history. It hosted the 2008 Olympic softball competition. Imagine the energy the atmosphere. The crack of the bat. The cheers of 13000 spectators.
Originally built in the 1980s for the 1990 Asian Games Fengtai Main Softball Field underwent a major renovation for the Olympics. It’s more than just a stadium. It’s a testament to Beijing’s commitment to hosting world-class sporting events.
Softball a women’s only Olympic sport at the time had its fourth appearance here. The USA a softball powerhouse won gold in Athens in 2004. Australia and Japan followed. China aiming for a medal played in front of a passionate home crowd.
The field itself is impressive. Two competition grounds one for training ensure athletes are well-prepared. New blue seats were installed boosting spectator capacity to 10000. Even environmentally friendly features like solar water heating were added. The International Olympic Committee’s guidelines were meticulously followed.
Before the Olympics this very field hosted the International Softball Federation’s XI Women’s World Championship. This was part of the ‘Good Luck Beijing’ event.
Fengtai railway station is conveniently located nearby. This connects to Beijing West Railway Station. A new subway line was planned to improve access even further.
