“A beacon of faith for over a century,” a voice might have echoed through the hallowed halls of Greater Galilee Baptist Church long ago. Here we stand before Greater Galilee Baptist Church, a testament to the enduring power of faith and community in New Orleans. Greater Galilee’s story begins not in a grand sanctuary, but in the humble home of Reverend Herbert Edwards and his wife Annabelle in 1916. They started a small Sunday school, a seed that would blossom into the vibrant church we see today. This initial gathering, formed to serve the African American community in the Barberton area, consisted of a handful of devoted individuals: the Edwards, Deacon and Sister B. N. Chandler, Brother and Sister Nay Smith, and Brother Mayfield. Their vision laid the cornerstone for Greater Galilee Baptist Church. The name “Greater Galilee” signifies not just a physical expansion, but also a growth in spiritual reach and influence. The church has seen many changes throughout its life. It experienced several name changes, from Peace and Goodwill Baptist Church to Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, finally settling on Greater Galilee Baptist Church in 2011. This symbolized a new chapter in its long history, a testament to its resilience and adaptability. The church’s journey involved moves from homes, to the Northern Theatre’s upper floor, and ultimately to its present location. This location, purchased in the pastorate of Reverend Isaac M. Yancy from a Caucasian congregation, became a permanent spiritual home. The purchase price, a significant $7,000 at the time, marked a milestone in the church’s growth and commitment to its community. The physical structure itself has undergone transformations, reflecting the evolving needs of the congregation. A remodeling in the late 1970s, led by Reverend Alfred Hawkins and completed under Reverend James A. Stanton, stands as a testament to the church’s ongoing evolution. During this period, the church even temporarily held services at the Weigand Building on Tuscarawas Avenue, highlighting the community’s support and adaptability. Greater Galilee Baptist Church isn’t simply a building; it’s a living testament to faith, perseverance, and community spirit. It’s a place where lives have been touched, spirits lifted, and hope kindled for over a century.
