First mentioned in 1266 Schloss Bladenhorst has a rich history. The knights of Blarnhurst once resided here. Later the von Düngelen family owned it. In 1338 Röger von Düngelen even offered it as a fortress to the Count of Kleve. Imagine the strategic importance.

The castle passed through various families. It belonged to Philipp von Viermundt from 1496. Then the von Romberg family inherited it. They held it for a considerable time from 1624 to 1891. After that the Freiherrn Weichs zur Wenne and the Klckner-Werke owned it.

Originally it had four wings. The gatehouse is the oldest part remaining. A chapel built in 1332 was unfortunately demolished in 1941. The current castle’s appearance stems from renovations between 1530 and 1584. It’s in the late Renaissance style. It remains a private residence. So no public tours are allowed. A shame really.

In 2006 the Sparkasse Vest bank took ownership. They owned it for only a short time before selling it in 2007. A private buyer from Dortmund purchased the castle. The castle grounds are part of the Bladenhorst landscape park. It’s a beautiful English landscape garden style.

Schloss Bladenhorst is more than just a building. It hosts events. Readings concerts lectures and even summer festivals occur irregularly. The annual Open Monument Day in September is a special occasion. The castle opens its doors. Visitors can tour the grounds. Oldtimers frequently visit too. Since 2015 even civil weddings take place in the castle’s impressive knight’s hall.

The castle sits nestled in the Emscherland’s marshland. It’s between the Emscher Deininghauser Bach and Salzbach rivers. The natural conditions allowed for the construction of the castle moat. The nearby Dortmund-Ems Canal once passed by. Now the Rhine-Herne Canal provides the waterway. The damp forest character is visible around the castle.

Schloss Bladenhorst is a living piece of history. A testament to its past occupants. It’s a beautiful and important structure within the Dortmund landscape. It continues to shape life in the area even today.
