How about stepping back in time almost a thousand years? The story of Église Sainte-Rictrude in Ronchin begins. This church stands as a testament to faith, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the community.

Église Sainte-Rictrude started as a small chapel. Imagine a humble structure dating back to the 11th or 12th century. Over six centuries it evolved. It underwent numerous changes adapting to the needs of the growing parish.

The church’s architecture reflects its long history. The base is constructed from Tournai sandstone. This solid foundation speaks to the Romanesque style. The walls are made of white stone. These stones were sourced from local Ronchin quarries.

Église Sainte-Rictrude was officially classified as a historical monument on October 12 1920. This recognition acknowledges its cultural significance. It protects it for future generations. The bell tower is a particularly noteworthy feature.

Let us talk about Sainte Rictrude. She was born in 613 in Toulouse. She married Adalbert in 630. He was the Duke of Douai. Rictrude and Adalbert had four children. In 643 Rictrude founded an abbey for women. After her husband’s assassination in 646 she became a nun. She entered the Abbaye de Marchiennes that same year. She later became the abbess. Rictrude died on May 12 688.

Inside Église Sainte-Rictrude, a classified calvary from the 15th century once stood. This remarkable artifact offered a tangible connection to the past.

The church bells have their own story. In 1917 during the First World War, the German army removed the original three bells. They wanted to melt them down for metal. In 1926 new bells were installed. A grand ceremony celebrated their arrival. The Bishop of Lille Mgr Quilliet even attended.

Église Sainte-Rictrude continues to be a focal point. The Association Mémoire de Ronchin organizes visits during heritage days. This allows people to discover its rich history.

Église Sainte-Rictrude is more than just a building. It is a living chronicle of Ronchin. It represents the dedication and artistry of generations past. Take a moment to appreciate the history. Remember the stories. Consider the enduring legacy of Église Sainte-Rictrude.
