A six-meter-wide enigma. That’s the Preah Noreai-Naraya Statue. We stand before a testament to Khmer artistry, a bronze sculpture of the Hindu deity Preah Noreay. This statue, originally from the 11th-century Mebon Temple in Angkor Archaeological Park, has embarked on a remarkable journey of restoration and remembrance. In May 2024, a solemn blessing ceremony was held at the National Museum of Cambodia for the Preah Noreai-Naraya Statue. Monks performed traditional rites, sprinkling holy water to bless the statue’s journey to France for much-needed restoration. The Preah Noreai-Naraya Statue’s restoration is a complex undertaking, complicated by previous restoration attempts in the 1950s. The current project aims to assess the impact of these earlier efforts using modern technology. This restoration is a collaborative project between Cambodia and France. The statue is being restored at the Centre de recherche et de restauration des musées de France (C2RMF) in Paris. This is because local teams lack the advanced technology necessary to work with the ancient bronze. The Preah Noreai-Naraya Statue provides a window into the impressive bronze casting capabilities of the 11th century. The restoration project also offers a deeper understanding of large-scale metal engraving techniques used during the Angkorian period. This research will enrich our knowledge of metalworking throughout history. The statue is not complete. It consists of 39 long-detached pieces, separated for almost a millennium. Using 3D imaging, specialists are working to model missing parts of the upper body and carefully reassemble the existing fragments. After its restoration, the Preah Noreai-Naraya Statue will be exhibited at the Guimet National Museum of Asian Arts in Paris. It will be the centerpiece of an exhibition showcasing 126 bronze sculptures from the National Museum of Cambodia, titled “Bronze Age of Angkor: Art of the Deities”. The exhibition will trace the evolution of metalworking from prehistoric times to the post-Angkorian period. The Preah Noreai-Naraya Statue’s journey will then continue to three locations in the US. There, it will share the legacy of Angkorian metalworking and celebrate Khmer civilization with the world. This statue’s journey is a poignant reminder of the endurance and fragility of cultural heritage. It’s a story of reuniting history, piece by piece.
