How about we step into a world where ancient craftsmanship meets the modern age right here at the 100 Handicraftsman Workshop? This isn’t just a workshop. It is a living museum dedicated to preserving China’s rich artistic heritage.

The 100 Handicraftsman Workshop literally means “Bai Gong Fang”. “Bai Gong” refers to “one hundred craftsmen.” This is a general term for artisans who created imperial arts for emperors and noblemen in ancient times. “Fang” means workshop.

Established in 2003 by the Beijing Municipal and Chongwen District now part of Dongcheng District the 100 Handicraftsman Workshop is dedicated to preserving and developing Chinese traditional handicrafts. It takes its name from “Kaogongji”. This is an official record of the State of Qi during the Spring and Autumn Period. That was over 2500 years ago. The name reflects its mission. It is a place where masters research and pass down ancient arts.

Within the 100 Handicraftsman Workshop, you will find 30 studios. These include Cloisonne, Carved Lacquer, Inside-Bottle Painting, Pearl, and Clay studios. Here, artisans create palace arts. They also produce handicrafts popular in everyday life.

You can witness the “Eight Unique Skills of Yanjing”. Yanjing is Beijing’s former name. These skills include engraved lacquer, ivory carving, cloisonne, jade sculpture, inlaid filigree, inlaid gold lacquer, palace carpets, and palace embroidery. Other studios focus on more common arts. These include paper-cutting, glassware, and dough figurines.

For a hands-on experience, visit the third floor. There is a DIY classroom there. It is equipped with everything you need to try your hand at traditional crafts. Masters teach paper-cutting. They also teach Chinese brush writing. You can also learn to make paper flowers and clay figurines. You can even paint facial masks. Photos of past visitors and master artisans adorn the walls. This creates an immersive atmosphere.

The 100 Handicraftsman Workshop is more than a collection of studios. It is a place where tradition comes alive. It connects visitors with the skills and artistry that have shaped Chinese culture for centuries. Spend some time here. Feel the flow of China’s cultural heritage in our fast-paced world. Before we move on, take one last look. Remember the dedication and skill that thrives within these walls. It is a testament to the enduring power of human creativity and cultural preservation.
