Have you ever wondered about a Seoul neighborhood named Bomun-dong? Bomun-dong a dong in Seongbuk District is more than just streets and houses. It’s a place steeped in history. Its name comes from Bomunsa Temple a significant landmark. Established when Seongbuk-gu separated from Dongdaemun-gu in 1948 Bomun-dong absorbed part of Sinseol-dong. Bomunsa Temple isn’t just any temple. It’s unique. It’s the only temple in Korea affiliated with the Bomun Order. It’s also run exclusively by Buddhist nuns. This temple has a fascinating history. It was once a place of prayer for queens and concubines. It even served as a refuge for high-ranking women. Bomunsa Temple withstood the Japanese colonial period. A remarkable nun named Eunyoung led the temple for over thirty years. She was Korea’s first nun dharma master and among the first eminent female doctrinal masters. She rebuilt much of the temple including the Seokguram an artificial cave. The Seokguram at Bomunsa Temple though inspired by Gyeongju’s Seokguram has key differences. Its entrance features three doors not one. A stone pagoda stands nearby. It supposedly houses Buddha’s tooth relics. It’s a stunning example of Goryeo architecture. Bomun-dong’s Bomunsa Temple also boasts the Geukrakbojeon hall. Originally called Daewoongjeon its original name was rediscovered during renovations in 2017. The hall’s pagoda roof and its Amitabha Buddha statue are impressive sights. Bomunsa Temple isn’t just a historical site. It’s an active part of the community. It offers free meals for the elderly hosts temple stays and organizes events for children and youths. Bomun-dong isn’t just a neighborhood.
