A tale of faith and resilience echoes through Hanover. We are standing before Christliche Wissenschaft. This church holds a unique place in the city’s religious history. It is a testament to the enduring power of belief.

The story of Christliche Wissenschaft in Hanover begins in the late 19th century. A woman named Bertha Günther-Peterson played a pivotal role. She introduced Christian Science to Hanover. Günther-Peterson began studying Christian Science in 1894. She became a member of The Mother Church in Boston in 1897.

Her background was quite unique. Both her father and husband were physicians. She had assisted them in their work. This gave her a desire to help people cope with disease. She had also been raised in a very pious atmosphere. A friend in Minneapolis told her about Christian Science. This friend had been healed by the Science after doctors had given up.

Günther-Peterson’s healing work proved successful. Patients traveled from across the German Empire to see her. From the summer of 1897, she led Christian Science services. These services included Wednesday evening meetings. In 1898, twelve Christian Scientists in Hanover united. They formed the first church in Germany. It was also the first on the European mainland. This marked the beginning of a strong movement. Thirty years later, it had spread to nearly every major German city. Large congregations existed.

In April 1902, the cornerstone was laid. The church building was located at Hildesheimer Straße 216. The dedication took place on October 26, 1902.

However, the rise of the Nazi party brought persecution. In 1936, Christian Scientists faced increasing hostility across Germany. On July 14, 1941, all Christian Science churches closed nationwide. Their assets were seized. Books and documents were confiscated. Functionaries were arrested and interrogated. Many endured torture. Some were deported to concentration camps without trial.

The Nazis were suspicious of Christian Science. Its theology clashed with Nazi ideology. Its roots in the United States also raised concerns. The Nazis opposed the spirit of freedom and justice. These principles were integral to Christian Science.

Two quotes from Mary Baker Eddy’s book illustrate this conflict. “Citizens of the world, accept the ‘glorious liberty of the children of God,’ and be free! This is your divine right.” Another quote reads: “Justice is the moral signification of law. Injustice indicates the absence of law.” Such sentiments and the church’s ties to the American Mother Church were incompatible with National Socialism.

After the end of World War II, religious freedom returned. From October 4, 1945, Christian Scientists in Hanover held services. They met in the Beethoven Hall of the Stadthalle. The Sunday school for children took place in a basement room.

In 1949, clearing the church property on Hildesheimer Straße began. In 1950, Christian Science gained official recognition. It became a public corporation in Lower Saxony. “First Church of Christ, Scientist, Hanover” was registered. This allowed for the return of assets seized by the Nazis.

The church sold its property. Within eighteen months, a new building was erected at Am Schiffgraben 24. The first service took place in November 1951. In the early 1990s, this building was demolished. A new architectural complex arose. The “First Church of Christ, Scientist, Hanover” found its place in a rotunda.
