Curious about a city split in two? Frankfurt Oder is just that. It sits on the German-Polish border. The Oder River divides it from Słubice. This wasn’t always the case. Słubice used to be part of Frankfurt. It was known as Dammvorstadt. That changed in 1945 after World War II.

Frankfurt’s history stretches back to the 13th century. Franconian colonists and traders first settled here. The city received its charter in 1253. It then joined the Hanseatic League in 1368. This boosted Frankfurt’s importance as a trade hub. In 1379, Frankfurt gained the right to free navigation on the Oder. Its fairs grew significantly.

The city also had a university. Founded in 1506, it moved to Cottbus and back. It was dissolved during the Thirty Years’ War. Later, Frederick William, the Great Elector, reestablished it. However, the university moved to Breslau in 1811. Today that city is Wrocław in Poland.

Frankfurt suffered greatly during World War II. Soviet forces besieged and seriously damaged it. But the city was rebuilt. Today, Frankfurt is a busy transit point for trade with Eastern Europe. Its inland harbor connects it to the Oder-Spree Canal.

Industries thrive here. They produce machinery, furniture, foodstuffs, shoes, and textiles. You can explore several landmarks in Frankfurt. The Church of St. Mary dates back to the 15th century. The town hall was remodeled in the early 17th century. The Church of St. Nicholas is another notable building.

The Kleist Museum honors the poet Heinrich von Kleist. It also houses a large library. In 1991, the Viadrina European University was founded here. It symbolizes Frankfurt’s modern role.

Frankfurt Oder faced population changes. In the late 1980s, it peaked at over 87000 residents. By 2002, it had fallen below 70000. In 2010, the population stood just above 60000. Today, Frankfurt is rebuilding ties with Słubice. They engage in cross-border cooperation. This aims to rediscover their shared history. The Institute for Applied History plays a key role. It promotes activities that bridge the past and present. Frankfurt Oder stands as a testament to resilience. It is a city that has transformed over centuries. From a medieval settlement to a modern border town. Frankfurt continues to evolve. It embraces its unique location and heritage.
