Across the Weymouth Back River, a silent sentinel stands. Great Esker Park, a testament to the power of ice and time, rises above the landscape. Great Esker Park isn’t just a park. It’s a journey through millennia, back to the last ice age. Imagine a colossal glacier, slowly retreating, leaving behind a unique gift. This gift is the esker, a winding ridge of sand and gravel, the backbone of Great Esker Park. At 90 feet tall, it’s the tallest esker ridge in North America, a geological marvel. This ridge, the heart of Great Esker Park, offers more than just a stunning view. It whispers tales of a time when this land was locked beneath ice. Twelve thousand years ago, meltwater carved tunnels through the glacier. Sand and gravel, carried by the rushing water, settled in these icy veins. When the glacier finally melted, these deposits remained, forming the esker we see today at Great Esker Park. Great Esker Park’s history doesn’t end with the ice age. The park has witnessed the changing tides of human history as well. Native Americans and European settlers relied on the Weymouth Back River for sustenance, especially river herring. Later, industry boomed along the river. Steel mills, wool factories, and fertilizer factories all left their mark. The Army Corps of Engineers even reshaped the river, deepening and widening it to accommodate these industries. Great Esker Park played a role in national defense too. The park served as a buffer for the U.S. Naval Ammunition Depot across the river. Military patrols would use the esker’s height to guard the base below. Great Esker Park’s transformation into a public space is a story of local activism. Thanks to Mary F. Toomey, a local environmentalist, the land was saved from development and sold to the Town of Weymouth in 1965. She founded the Great Esker Park Natural Science Center in 1966. A sign in the park commemorates her dedication. Today, Great Esker Park offers over six miles of trails. You can walk along the paved path atop the esker or explore the narrower, unpaved trails that wind through the woods and along the salt marsh. Look for ospreys in their nests. Watch for egrets wading in the shallows. Observe the river herring swimming upstream in the spring. This park is a haven for wildlife. Great Esker Park isn’t just a place to walk or hike. It’s a place to connect with nature, history, and the power of geological processes. It’s a reminder of the long, slow march of time and the enduring beauty of our planet.
