A century of faith. That’s what Saint Bridget of Sweden Church represents. Right here in South Los Angeles this church stands tall. It’s a beacon of hope for the community.

For over 100 years Saint Bridget has served its diverse community. Generations of families have benefited from its outreach programs. The church wasn’t always the grand building we see today. It started humbly in a small rented house on West 51st Street in 1920. Three years later a combination church and school was built. The current church edifice wasn’t completed until 1953. A school followed in 1960.

The Josephite Fathers and Brothers oversee Saint Bridget. They’re a Catholic order dedicated to serving African American communities. They’ve been instrumental in the church’s growth and impact on the community. They formed in 1871 to help newly freed people after the Civil War.

Saint Bridget has been much more than a place of worship. It’s been a center for social justice. The church has tackled significant issues such as AIDS and homelessness. It offered support and resources to those in need. This has made a huge difference in the lives of many. The church continues to offer support through programs focused on COVID-19 testing and vaccinations. They also help with housing healthcare education and public transportation.

In 1979 the Josephites incorporated Saint Bridget into their organization. In 1980 the church formed its gospel choir. The choir is still active today celebrating over 40 years of ministry. The church also hosts programs for youth young adults and senior citizens.

In 2021 Saint Bridget celebrated its 101st anniversary. The celebration included the dedication of Saint Brigid Square. The city renamed the intersection of 52nd Street and Western Avenue in the church’s honor. The anniversary also included a daylong event called Saint Brigid Homeless Connect. This provided hot meals clothing and other essentials to those in need.

Saint Bridget of Sweden Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to faith community and service. It’s a place where history echoes through the halls and hope continues to thrive. Its legacy continues to inspire generations to come.
