St. Ann’s RC Church

Gazing up at St. Ann’s RC Church, did you ever imagine its humble beginnings? The original St. Ann’s RC Church, built in 1844, started as a simple tapia structure. Only its foundation was stone, a testament to the community’s dedication on land gifted by Jeanne Rose Langagne. The church’s growth mirrors the burgeoning community it served. By 1846, it accommodated 200 souls. This number swelled to 280 by 1877. The late 19th century saw significant improvements. Records from October 1878 detail additions like a nave, pulpit, sacristy, new windows, benches, and even two bells installed in the tower. A marble altar, funded by a Mrs. Smyth, replaced its wooden predecessor, accompanied by two smaller wooden altars dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and St. Joseph. St. Ann’s RC Church faced the familiar challenges of time and the elements. By 1883, the parish priest described it as an “old garment,” costly to repair. Despite these difficulties, St. Ann’s persevered. The church’s resilience is etched into its very stones. The exterior Laventille stone and Yellow Stock bricks, typical of the period, speak to the craftsmanship of a bygone era. The varying stonework details on the façade reveal the different periods of construction and the evolving tools of the tradesmen. The wooden ceiling trusses of St. Ann’s RC Church are particularly remarkable. Their intricate design and low placement allow for easy admiration, showcasing the blend of structural necessity and artistic beauty. The church underwent significant renovations, culminating in its rededication on June 22, 1983. The Gothic style, with its characteristic pointed arches and intricate detailing, remained a key element. The stained-glass windows of St. Ann’s RC Church tell their own stories. The southern transept windows, dedicated to builder/parish priests Frs Victor Bisquey d’Arraing and LM Loughlin, were crafted by French and Grenobloise artisans. Newer stained-glass windows in the northern transept, created by William Earley from Ireland, depict St. Ann with young Mary, St. Joseph with young Jesus, and St. Joachim. These vibrant windows, gifts from parishioners, honor the mothers of the priests who have served the community. The history of St. Ann’s RC Church isn’t just about bricks and mortar.
