Picture the scene. You stand before Saint Theresa’s Church in Houston. Its history whispers from the very stones. This isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and community.
Saint Theresa’s Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a living legacy. Its story begins in January 1946. Bishop Christopher E Byrne assigned Father Ralph Diefenbach to establish a new church. Father Ralph found a perfect three-acre plot. It was at Durham now Durford and Rodrigo Streets. He quickly began gathering parishioners. On April 9 1946 parishioners first met at St Thomas High School. They named their new parish Saint Theresa’s. It was likely due to Father Ralph’s devotion to Saint Theresa of Lisieux.
Their first Mass was held on Palm Sunday April 14 1946. It took place at Memorial Elementary School. This served as their temporary home for over a year. Meanwhile Father Diefenbach celebrated daily Mass at St Thomas.
The community’s dedication was incredible. They raised funds through events like the first annual BBQ and Bazaar. This event in July 1946 was a huge success. Less than a year later the parish school held a blessing and groundbreaking ceremony. This was on April 20 1947.
The school opened in February 1948. Three Sisters of the Incarnate Word taught 220 students. They taught grades one through eight in just three classrooms. Initially parents drove the sisters to and from their convent daily. This was until funds for a station wagon were raised and one of the sisters learned to drive.
The first Mass in the temporary church was on November 30 1947. The following year the school dedicated its beautiful north wing. The school was called the most modern in America. By September 1948 385 students were enrolled.
The parish’s growth continued. By 1957 they began fundraising for a new church building. This building served the community until renovations in 2017. The church incorporated stunning features. This included a pipe organ chimes stained glass windows from Germany and Stations of the Cross from Italy. The church’s initial dedication was on Christmas Eve 1959. Sadly Father Ralph didn’t live to see that day. He passed away earlier in a plane crash.
Saint Theresa’s Church continues to thrive. It stands as a vibrant center of faith. It’s a place of community and worship. It’s a beautiful testament to the enduring spirit of its founders and parishioners. It’s a living story unfolding before your eyes.
