Established on April 22 1939 NG Kerk Edenvale stands proudly in Edenvale Johannesburg. It’s a cornerstone of the community a testament to faith and resilience. This church wasn’t always here. Its story is intertwined with Edenvale’s own growth.
Imagine the early 1900s. Edenvale was a small village. Cornish miners settled here after the Boer War. They built simple homes some still visible today. The land itself was once part of the Rietfontein farm owned by Tobias Mynhardt. His home remains a landmark now known as Frank Marret Park. Mynhardt sold portions of the farm including the land where our church now stands.
The church’s construction likely followed the town’s development. The 1922 Rand Revolt caused hardship for miners. Many families faced unemployment. A voluntary committee organized soup kitchens. This act of community support reflects the spirit that would later build this church a haven for spiritual nourishment. As Edenvale grew so did the need for a permanent place of worship.
