Did you know that Saint John’s Mill has transformed over the years? This former textile mill now stands as a vibrant conference center. Today we will explore the story of Saint John’s Mill.

Saint John’s Mill is located on the banks of the River Neb. It sits in the heart of Tynwald Mills. This location was once the site of Moores textile mill. What makes Saint John’s Mill special? The water wheel that powered the machinery was unusually located inside the mill.

Imagine rolls of cloth being stretched on tenter frames. These frames stood in the field next to Saint John’s Mill. These drying racks were essential to the textile process.

However by the 1990s Saint John’s Mill fell into disuse. It became semi-derelict. Brambles and bracken overgrew the tenter field. But a Millennium project revived the site. Prescott Associates was commissioned to design a garden.

The brief was clear. The garden should be open and accessible. It should accommodate outdoor events and quiet contemplation. The design needed to reflect the site’s industrial past. It also had to be welcoming to both people and wildlife.

The new design cleverly incorporated the original tenter frames. A footpath marks the route where cloth was once carried. This path forms the spine of the garden. Rebuilt frames border the path evoking the past.

Water plays a key role in the garden’s design. The mill race was relined. Water now flows through a new cascade. The sound of splashing water fills the air. From there the water runs under the path into a new pond. The pond offers stillness and reflects the sky.

The garden is divided into themed rooms. These rooms become less formal further from the building. Habitats include a short turf meadow and a summer meadow. Common Spotted Orchids have colonized the summer meadow. A south-facing butterfly border attracts vibrant insects. Woodland boasts spring flowers like wood anemones and bluebells.

The Manx Wildlife Trust assisted with planting. They also managed the garden for several years. Over time the garden has matured. It remains a beautiful space enjoyed by all.

In 2000 the Saint John’s Mill charity was founded. It was a Millennium project supported by local churches. The aim was to create a central facility. This facility would offer training and activities for the whole island. The charity’s objective is seeking the inspiration of Christ for our community.

Bishop Noel Jones opened Saint John’s Mill in April 2003. This followed two years of careful restoration. The original water wheel was restored and completed in July 2009.

Saint John’s Mill is managed by a board of Trustees and a dedicated staff. Many volunteers contribute to its open and welcoming atmosphere. The Mill partners with businesses government departments charities community groups and individuals. It provides a venue for hundreds of events. It also collaborates on initiatives that benefit the community. Saint John’s Mill stands as a testament to renewal. It blends history with modern purpose.
