Once upon a time, El Viso arose as a vision of modern living. El Viso stands before us a testament to architectural ingenuity and social evolution. It is a neighborhood etched in Madrid’s vibrant tapestry.

El Viso began in the early 1930s. Architect Rafael Bergamín Gutiérrez designed it with Luis Felipe Vivanco. Their vision transformed land near the Hipódromo de la Castellana into a residential marvel. It was conceived as Cooperativa de Casas Económicas El Viso. The project drew inspiration from Adolf Loos’ architectural principles.

Initially, El Viso was intended as affordable housing. The 1925 “Ley de Casas Económicas” spurred its creation. However, its destiny shifted. El Viso became a haven for Madrid’s elite.

El Viso’s location was key. It occupied one of the city’s highest points. This gave it its name, meaning “the view”. The name was chosen for its panoramic views of the Sierra de Guadarrama. These views have been lost due to later construction.

El Viso comprised single-family homes. They had two stories and reflected rationalist aesthetics. The style echoed the architectural trends of the Ciudad Universitaria. Intellectuals and professionals soon populated these homes.

El Viso defied expectations. It transformed from a project for blue-collar workers into an exclusive enclave. Its design catered to modern lifestyles. Homes boasted amenities like telephone lines. They also had electrical systems that were pioneering for the time.

El Viso stood apart with its architectural simplicity. It had cubic volumes, flat roofs, and elongated windows. Bergamín described it as “a somewhat dry architecture”. This emphasized practicality over ornamentation.

El Viso’s layout fostered community. The original plan included 130 houses. But, the developer increased the density to 242 homes. This amplified the project’s profitability.

El Viso’s transformation reflected changing times. It became a symbol of status and luxury. Its residents enjoy a quality of life matched by few other places.

El Viso is bounded by key streets today. These include Paseo de la Castellana, Avenida de Concha Espina, and Calle de María de Molina. Within these boundaries lies a district of unparalleled affluence. In 2017, El Viso’s per capita income was the highest in Spain. It surpassed even the opulent Salamanca district.

El Viso remains a coveted address. It attracts figures from business, aristocracy, and the arts. The neighborhood retains its exclusive aura. This is despite its beginnings as an affordable housing initiative.

El Viso has adapted to modern needs. It enjoys excellent transport links. Several Metro lines serve the area. These include lines 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. These connect El Viso to the wider city.

El Viso is more than bricks and mortar. It embodies Madrid’s evolving identity. Its streets whisper stories of architectural vision. They also tell tales of social transformation. As we conclude our visit to El Viso, remember its unique journey. It rose from humble beginnings to become one of Madrid’s most prestigious neighborhoods.
