On a chilly January morning in 1896, a small group of seventeen souls gathered with a shared dream. They established the First Baptist Church of La Porte. The church’s first home was a simple affair, a testament to their faith and determination. The women of the congregation even crafted a large overhead tent, providing a makeshift sanctuary during those warm summer months. Imagine their joy as their first permanent structure was completed in March 1900, the building filled to capacity for its dedication. First Baptist Church of La Porte has always been a beacon of hope. During World War I and the difficult years of the Great Depression, the church kept its doors open. It even served as a community church, offering solace and support during those challenging times. As La Porte grew, so did the church. New sanctuaries and educational buildings were added, demonstrating their commitment to both spiritual growth and community service. The church even purchased land for a playground, a testament to their belief in nurturing young minds and spirits. Even hurricanes couldn’t dampen their spirits. Although severely damaged by Hurricane Alicia in 1983, the congregation persevered. They renovated the sanctuary and repaired the educational building, never once missing a single service. This resilience is a testament to the enduring spirit of First Baptist Church of La Porte and its congregation. The First Baptist Church of La Porte continues to serve its community. It stands as a testament to the power of faith, resilience, and community.
