Feel the glass’s sharp edges. This is the Runner.

Before you stands Dromeas also known as The Runner a truly astonishing sculpture. It towers eight meters high a testament to modern Greek art. Created by Costas Varotsos in the late 1980s it’s made of glass and iron. Thousands of sharp pieces of glass form the runner’s blurred shape. The Runner’s design is avant-garde. It depicts a human in perpetual motion.

Initially installed in Omonia Square in 1988 it was moved in 1994. Construction for the Athenian Metro threatened the fragile sculpture. It now resides near the National Gallery. Its new location is fitting. The Runner now accompanies marathon runners in their final kilometer.

Dromeas has received mixed reviews. Some find it aesthetically unpleasing. Others celebrate its abstract form and use of unconventional materials. It’s a symbol of postmodernism in Athens. Varotsos himself saw the Runner as representing the human condition. The constant movement of life.

Initially named Xenos meaning stranger the sculpture’s name changed. The public associated it with the Olympic Games and marathon runners. The glass is sharp and jagged. It evokes a sense of both motion and vulnerability. The Runner is a complex piece that continues to fascinate and challenge viewers. It’s a true emblem of Athens a unique and powerful symbol in the urban landscape. Its existence is a reminder of the city’s dynamic energy. It’s a piece of art that has witnessed and reflects the constant movement of life. The Runner stands as a timeless testament to human perseverance and creativity.
