Whispers of history surround us. We stand before Wat Suwannaram Ratchaworawihan a temple steeped in centuries of stories. This isn’t just any temple. Wat Suwannaram Ratchaworawihan holds a special place in Bangkok’s history.

Originally known as Wat Thong its roots stretch back to the Ayutthaya period. Imagine the bustling life of that era. This very spot once witnessed a darker chapter. During the reign of King Taksin of Thonburi it served as an execution ground for Burmese prisoners of war. A chilling thought isn’t it?

King Phutthayotfa Chulalok Rama I later bestowed the name Wat Suwannaram. This signified royal patronage a significant honor for a temple with such a past. The grounds continued to witness significant events. Until the reign of King Chulalongkorn Rama V Wat Suwannaram Ratchaworawihan served as the Royal Cremation site. Members of the Royal Family and high-ranking officials found their final rest here.

King Nangklao Rama III initiated extensive renovations. He commissioned two renowned artists Luang Wichijesda and Luang Seniborirak to paint murals in the ordination hall. These artists famously competed secretly. They used veils to hide their works in progress. Their masterpiece depicts stories from the Mahanipata Jataka. These murals remain a testament to the Rattanakosin era’s artistic prowess. Around 80 percent of the original artwork has survived.

The ordination hall itself is architecturally unique. Its curved shape resembles a Chinese junk a reflection of the late Ayutthaya style.

Wat Suwannaram Ratchaworawihan’s principal Buddha image Phra Satsada is considered sacred. People come daily to make vows. They perform a unique ritual. They tie a loincloth around their waist and run around the ordination hall three times making horse-like sounds. This is known as running the horse.

Even today whispers persist of the temple’s haunted past. A spirit house stands on the Wat Suwannaram School playground. This is dedicated to the spirits of those Burmese soldiers. Some claim to have witnessed ghostly apparitions. The temple’s history echoes in its walls a blend of regal patronage gruesome past and enduring spiritual significance. Wat Suwannaram Ratchaworawihan stands as a silent witness to Bangkok’s vibrant and complex history. Its story continues to unfold within its tranquil walls.
