Why is that old gatehouse still standing? That’s the original entrance to Garden State Park. Before it became a shopping center, this land was home to one of the most famous racetracks in the country. Opened in 1942, Garden State Park was a hub for horse racing enthusiasts. It saw legendary horses like Citation and even Secretariat thunder down its track. But its story, like many racetracks, is marked by both triumph and tragedy. In 1977, a devastating fire ripped through the grandstand. Thankfully, everyone escaped, but the wooden structure was completely destroyed. It seemed like the end for Garden State Park, but it was reborn in 1985. A brand new, state-of-the-art grandstand rose from the ashes. However, despite its modern amenities and the thrill of the races, Garden State Park never quite regained its former glory. The final race was held in 2001, and the grandstand was demolished in 2003. Only the old gatehouse, a silent sentinel, remains as a reminder of the cheers, the heartbreak, and the legendary horses that once graced Garden State Park.
