“A suburb named after a footballer?” someone in the group might wonder aloud. Well, not just any footballer! Cederna, this tranquil suburb of Monza, is actually named after Giulio Cederna. He was a prominent figure in the early days of Italian football. He even played for AC Milan! Giulio’s father, Antonio Cederna, was a fascinating character too. He was a Garibaldian, imagine that! A follower of the legendary Giuseppe Garibaldi. He eventually settled in Milan, becoming a textile industrialist and founding a cotton mill in the Gratosoglio district. Later, he established two more mills in Agrate Brianza and Monza. It seems Giulio inherited his father’s entrepreneurial spirit, eventually taking over the family’s cotton mills after his football career. He led a full life, becoming a father to five daughters and a son. And so, the legacy of the Cederna family, from football pitches to textile mills, lives on in the peaceful suburb that bears their name.
