Gazing up at the Fisch Sculpture, one might wonder about its quirky, abstract form. This metal marvel, located in Hamburg-Neugraben-Fischbek, isn’t your typical fish tale. The Fisch Sculpture, created in 1997 by Hans-Joachim Frielinghaus, is part of a larger piece called “Frosch und Fisch” (Frog and Fish). It’s located at the Kehrwende, at the end of Scheideholzhang, near house number 7. The Fisch Sculpture is made of metal, a striking vertical disc. It stands on a low brick pedestal. It has a companion piece nearby, a horizontal disc representing a frog. Both sculptures have only suggested features, hinting at fins, eyes, or legs. Interestingly, the Fisch Sculpture wasn’t commissioned by the city. It was purchased by the Wohnungsbaugenossenschaft Süderelbe, a local housing association. They own the buildings surrounding the sculptures, adding a unique touch to their community. The Fisch Sculpture stands as a testament to the power of art in unexpected places, a hidden gem in a residential neighborhood.
