Completed in 1918 Lake Hodges Dam stands tall. It’s a multiple-arch dam a marvel of engineering. This impressive structure sits on the San Dieguito River. It was commissioned by the Volcan Water Company. John S Eastwood designed this incredible Lake Hodges Dam. The city of San Diego later purchased it.

Lake Hodges Dam is more than just a dam. It’s a vital part of San Diego’s water infrastructure. The reservoir supplies water to the Santa Fe Irrigation District. It also serves the San Dieguito Water District. The Lake Hodges Dam provides water for the city of San Diego itself. This ensures the region has access to a precious resource.

But Lake Hodges Dam’s story isn’t just about water. In 2005 a significant project began. The San Diego County Water Authority connected Lake Hodges Reservoir to Olivenhain Reservoir. This ambitious pipeline project was completed in 2012. It allows for emergency water storage. It also generates electricity. Water pumped to Olivenhain at night returns during peak demand. This clever system helps meet energy needs.

Lake Hodges Dam has faced challenges. Following the 2017 Oroville Dam crisis inspections were mandatory. Lake Hodges Dam initially failed inspection. The maximum lake level had to be lowered 20 feet. This was a necessary safety precaution.

The dam’s age necessitated repairs. In May 2022 routine maintenance revealed cracks. This led to a year-long closure. The lake and recreation area reopened June 2 2023. The city plans to build a new dam around 2034. Safety concerns necessitate keeping the water at a low elevation. This unfortunately limits the city’s water access.

Today Lake Hodges Dam stands as a testament to human ingenuity. It’s a vital part of San Diego’s history and future. It’s also a popular recreational spot. Visitors enjoy hiking fishing kayaking and birdwatching. The area teems with wildlife including endangered species. Lake Hodges Dam is a place where history nature and recreation meet. It is a true San Diego landmark.
