Picture this. It’s 1881. The air buzzes with excitement around Schule Schulkamp. This year marks its official founding. Yet, the story stretches back further. Before this building, lessons were held in a building on Sieberlingstrasse. This still stands today.
Schule Schulkamp started small. But it quickly grew. By 1900, an addition called the Uhrenhaus was built. Four teachers already worked at the school. Then, in 1912, Hermann Renner gifted the school a gymnasium. Can you imagine how excited the children were?
After World War II, Schule Schulkamp was bursting. Over 600 children attended in 1946. By 1950, that number jumped to 800. However, as Hamburg’s economy improved, families moved to bigger houses. School Schulkamp had only about 300 students in 1960.
Schule Schulkamp always kept up with the times. In 1967, another building was added. We still use this classroom wing today. Student numbers continued to drop. So, in 1968, the Klein Flottbeker Schule Quellental merged with Schule Schulkamp.
Until 1984, Schule Schulkamp taught grades five and six. Since then, it is a primary school. In recent years, student numbers have risen again. The school needed more space. In 2004, the blue Pavillon was built. By 2012, two more rooms were added using containers.
The latest addition houses five classrooms. It also has a multipurpose hall with a stage. A school kitchen completes the building. This new structure cleverly connects the 1960s classroom wing. It also blends with the older buildings from the school’s early days.
Today, Schule Schulkamp is stable. It has three classes per grade. It also offers preschool programs.
Many people have led Schule Schulkamp. Martin Schlensog took over in 1945. Klaus Schumacher followed in 1962. Ilse Stalmann became head in 1979. Dirk Mötting led from 1988. Martin Langos-Luca started in 2007. Since 2016, Simone Kropp has been in charge. Schule Schulkamp remains a vital part of Nienstedten. It has been for generations.
