Fancy knowing where young minds have been shaped for over 170 years? The Mallinckrodt-Gymnasium stands before us. It is more than just a school. It’s a story of resilience.

Mallinckrodt-Gymnasium began in 1851. Pauline von Mallinckrodt founded it as a girls’ school. Sisters of Christian Love ran it until 1978. The Erzbistum Paderborn then took over.

Imagine the girls who passed through its doors. The Mallinckrodt-Gymnasium faced challenges early on. In 1873 and 1874, all elementary schools were closed. This happened during the Kulturkampf. But the school reopened in 1892. It continued as a higher girls’ school.

In 1899, the school was renamed Marienschule. It found a new home on Silberstraße. A building on Eisenmarkt followed in 1907. It even had an assembly hall and gym.

World War II brought devastation. In 1942, the city seized the building. Heavy bombing in 1943 damaged it severely. Classes stopped.

But the Mallinckrodt-Gymnasium rose again. Rebuilding finished in 1951. The first post-war Abitur exams took place in 1959. By 1978, the school had grown to about 900 students. The old building could not contain that many. The sisters could not afford a new building.

So, the Erzbistum Paderborn took over the Mallinckrodt-Gymnasium. In 1986, the school moved here to a new building on Südrandweg. Boys were admitted for the first time. A triple sports hall was added in 1991.

The Mallinckrodt-Gymnasium kept evolving. A cafeteria opened in 1998. An outdoor sports facility was built in 2003. A playground followed in 2014. The teachers’ library got a makeover in 2016. A self-study room was created in 2017.

Today, the Mallinckrodt-Gymnasium offers much. Students learn English, French, Latin, and Spanish. There are tutoring programs and many after-school groups. A project day addresses racism. A sports festival happens each year. Students participate in ERASMUS projects.

The Mallinckrodt-Gymnasium has shaped notable figures. Jurist Barbara Havliza graduated in 1976. Politician Agnieszka Brugger finished in 2004. Professional poker player Igor Kurganov completed his Abitur in 2007.

The Mallinckrodt-Gymnasium stands as a testament to faith. It champions education and progress. Its story echoes through these halls. Its impact extends far beyond these walls.
