That massive structure before us. That’s the Saint Petersburg Dam. It wasn’t always there you know.

The Saint Petersburg Dam is a marvel of engineering. It protects this beautiful city from the devastating effects of floods. For centuries Saint Petersburg suffered. Over 300 floods ravaged the city. Some were truly catastrophic. The flood of 1824 was particularly devastating. Water levels in the Neva River rose over four meters. Kronstadt and Saint Petersburg were severely damaged.

The idea of a dam was first proposed after that 1824 disaster. It was deemed too ambitious. The city continued to suffer annual floods. For years brilliant minds worked on plans. Imperial Russia and later the Soviet Union wrestled with the challenge.

The 1955 flood finally proved the need for a solution. The Soviet government chose a massive undertaking. A 25.4 kilometer complex of eleven dams. It even includes a six-lane highway on top.

Construction began in 1979. It continued until 1995. Then it paused for many years. The project was around 70% complete. It wasn’t until 2011 that it was finally finished. The dam was formally opened on August 12 2011.

The southern water-lock is particularly fascinating. It’s the heart of the dam. The radial steel gates are ingenious. Each gate is connected to a massive hinge joint. It’s a ball with a diameter of 1.5 meters. The ball allows the gate to rotate. The arms are 120 meters long. Imagine that scale.

Beneath this southern water-lock lies a remarkable road tunnel. It’s 1961 meters long. Two transport corridors run through. Each corridor is 15.25 meters wide and 5.5 meters high. The deepest part is 24.3 meters under the marine channel.

The Saint Petersburg Dam isn’t just about flood protection. It also completes the Saint Petersburg Ring Road. It provides vital transport links to Kotlin Island and Kronstadt.

The dam incorporates over thirty water purification installations. This improves water quality in the Neva Bay. It’s a huge undertaking for environmental protection too.

The Saint Petersburg Dam stands as a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance. It safeguards this city and its history. It also connects the past with the future. It is a vital part of the story of Saint Petersburg. A story of resilience and triumph over nature.
