Did you know Mt Calvary Missionary Baptist Church wasn’t always here? This very spot holds a rich history a testament to faith resilience and community. Mt Calvary wasn’t built overnight. Its story began not in Detroit but with a vision. A vision that grew from a small mission in 1921. This mission started with Pastor W Leitz of St Peter Lutheran Church. He saw potential in northeast Detroit. The Mission Board of the Michigan District of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod agreed. They called Pastor Theodore H H Dorn a Concordia Seminary graduate. He started a Lutheran congregation. Seven families were the founding members. Only men could vote then. This small band of seven began worship services. They met in a home at 11455 Barlow. This became Our Savior Congregation.
The congregation purchased four lots on the corner of Chalmers and Seymour. They dedicated their first house of worship in 1922. They converted a bungalow into a chapel. The second story was the pastor’s residence. The name changed to Montclair Heights Ev Lutheran Church. Sunday School began in 1922. By Christmas 35 children were enrolled. A day school followed in 1923 starting with 12 children around the pastor’s dining room table. Imagine those early days. Imagine the dedication required. The congregation’s faith and perseverance are inspiring. The church grew significantly. In 1924 they became a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. They changed their name to Mt Calvary Ev Lutheran Church.
The church expanded rapidly. The congregation grew to over 500 members. A new sanctuary was built. Its cornerstone was laid in November 1930. The basement served as a place of worship for 10 years. The congregation faced challenges. In 1955 the church was burglarized. An arson fire destroyed part of the chancel. A car accident killed a member and injured eleven others. Despite these setbacks Mt Calvary continued to thrive. The church added a school building in 1953 adding six classrooms. Later a tower additional classrooms a school library and an auditorium were added. Mt Calvary became a hub for the community. It served as an important institution. It provided services to the neighborhood for decades. Mt Calvary continues to adapt and serve. Its story shows that even when challenges arise it continues to grow. It remains a testament to faith and community. Today Mt Calvary stands as a beacon of hope. It offers spiritual guidance and support to its members. It continues its legacy of service.
