The air here seems different, doesn’t it? A little heavier, perhaps, weighted with memory. You are standing before the gates of Nghĩa trang Giáo xứ Bắc Hải, Binh Hung Hoa Cemetery to most. This was once the largest cemetery in Ho Chi Minh City. Its story is a testament to the ever-changing nature of life, death, and the city itself. The cemetery was established in the mid-20th century, a time of great upheaval in Vietnam. It quickly became the final resting place for people from all walks of life. You can almost hear the whispers of their stories carried on the breeze, tales woven into the very fabric of this sacred ground. Look around. Notice the unique street layout. The streets running east to west are named after rivers: the Mekong, the Dong Nai, the Huong. The north-south streets bear the names of ancient Vietnamese provinces, reminders of a time when this bustling metropolis was a tapestry of villages and rice paddies. For many years, Binh Hung Hoa Cemetery was a place of peace and remembrance. However, the rapid urbanization of Ho Chi Minh City did not spare even this solemn place. As the city grew, the cemetery found itself surrounded by bustling streets and the clamor of city life. Sadly, Binh Hung Hoa Cemetery was officially closed for burials in 2011. The city’s relentless growth demanded more space, leaving many to reflect on the impermanence of even our most cherished spaces. Yet, a sense of sanctity remains. The memory of those laid to rest here lives on, their stories intertwined with the growth of this vibrant city.
