In 1889, a seed of knowledge was planted. The South Pasadena Lyceum, a free reading room, opened its doors in the Graham & Mohr Opera House. This marked the beginning of the South Pasadena Public Library’s journey. The South Pasadena Public Library officially emerged in 1895. The city embraced Resolution 48, establishing a free public library supported by taxes. Nellie Keith became the first City Librarian, a guardian of this newfound treasure trove of stories. The library found its first true home in the same location as the Lyceum. The South Pasadena Public Library’s story took a pivotal turn in 1906. Andrew Carnegie, a philanthropist, offered $10,000 for a new building. The city agreed to contribute $1,000 annually for its upkeep. In 1907, Carnegie himself laid the cornerstone at Diamond Avenue and El Centro Street. The library expanded in 1917 thanks to further generosity from the Carnegie Corporation. Stack rooms, a sunroom, and a basement auditorium were added. The building itself embarked on a journey in 1930. Sections of the original library were moved to the center of Library Park by the Kress House Moving Company. The Campbell Construction Company then reconstructed the library into its new form. The Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library formed in 1950, a testament to its importance to the community. Another significant transformation occurred in 1982. The library was renovated and expanded. The 1930 building became the Community Room. Today, the South Pasadena Public Library at 1100 Oxley Street continues to serve the community. It offers a variety of programs. These include Tech Help Sessions, Family Storytime, and a Teen Poetry Exchange. The library is open seven days a week, offering a haven for learning and exploration.
