How many secrets can a fountain hold? The Chafariz do Passeio Alegre, right before your eyes, has seen a lot in its time. This isn’t just any fountain. It’s a classified National Monument, tucked away in the heart of the Jardim do Passeio Alegre. Dating back to the 18th century, the Chafariz do Passeio Alegre was originally designed by the architect Nicolau Nasoni for the Quinta da Prelada gardens. It eventually found its new home here in the 20th century, becoming a part of this beautiful park. Notice the intricate details, the four gargoyles around the basin, each spouting water into the larger cloverleaf-shaped dish. The central column, adorned with sculptures of plants and mythical creatures, culminates in a sphere topped with a sculpted burst resembling flames.
