Remember the name Parabiago. It is more than just a location on a map. This town in Lombardy, near Milan, whispers tales of ancient settlements, medieval battles, and industrial transformation. Parabiago’s story begins long before the present day.

Imagine Celtic-Insubrian tribes settling here in the 4th century BC. They laid the foundations for a village that would evolve through Roman rule. Archeological finds confirm this rich past. The Parabiago Plate, a silver plate used to cover an urn, stands as a testament to the town’s ancient heritage.

In the Early Middle Ages, Parabiago gained importance as the center of a parish. It was also the heart of an autonomous county called Comitatus Parabiagi. The Sanbonifacio family, of Frankish descent, governed this area. Theodelinda, a Lombard queen, granted permission for an artificial stream named Riale in the 7th century. This stream flowed through the village until 1928.

Now, picture this. It is 1339. You are standing on a battlefield near Parabiago. The Battle of Parabiago rages. Lodrisio Visconti clashes with Luchino Visconti and his nephew Azzone for control of Milan. Legend says Saint Ambrose appeared miraculously. He led the Milanese army to victory. The Crivelli family then inherited the County of Parabiago.

Parabiago faced hardship in the following centuries. Francesco Sforza pillaged it in 1449. The Bourbons of Spain looted it in 1527. Epidemics struck in 1529 and 1540. Yet, Parabiago persevered.

The 18th century brought development under Austrian rule. Then the Industrial Revolution transformed Parabiago. Felice Gajo established the Unione Manifatture di Parabiago, a textile company. Paolo Castelnuovo founded the first shoe factory in 1899. This marked a new era. Parabiago became known as the “City of Footwear”.

The 20th century brought more change. Parabiago experienced an economic boom in the 1960s. Small shoemakers grew into big factories. Chemical and mechanical industries emerged. Immigrants arrived from Southern Italy. Parabiago officially became a city on November 27, 1985.

However, the early 1990s brought challenges. The Tangentopoli scandal forced the Town Council to resign. Some local politicians were arrested.

Today, Parabiago is a thriving town. Metro Line S5 serves the district. A regional railway station connects it to other cities. Local buses provide transportation within the area.

Parabiago stands as a testament to resilience. From ancient settlements to medieval battles to industrial growth, it has a rich story. As we conclude our visit, remember Parabiago. It is a city that carries its history with pride. It continues to evolve while honoring its past.
