Ready to explore a testament to Bukhara’s golden age? This is the Abdullaxon Madrasah. It stands as a stunning example of 16th-century architecture.

Abdullaxon Madrasah is located in the northern part of the Koshmadrasa ensemble. It faces the Modarikhan Madrasah. Together they form a striking architectural pair. Such paired structures are called “double madrasahs” in Central Asia.

Abdullah II built this madrasah. Construction spanned from 1587 to 1590. The architect remains unknown. The Abdullaxon Madrasah showcases Bukhara’s architectural achievements.

Notice the large peshravs on the western and northern facades. The southern side blends with a former bathhouse. This makes its protrusion less noticeable.

Inside the Abdullaxon Madrasah, daily prayers once took place. This included five times daily and Friday prayers.

The madrasah’s structure differs from typical designs. Two-story rooms surround a courtyard. Galleries and high porches adorn both sides. Entrances lead to inner rooms and living spaces. Look up to see the large gable facing south. The wings feature muqarnas with lacquered decorations.

Entering the Abdullaxon Madrasah, you’d find classrooms and a mosque. A unique door jamb style uses small pieces of wood. They are shaped into a knot.

The courtyard follows the “choraivon” method. High gables align along one line. Vestibules or prayer rooms occupy the corners. A room with a wide dome sits in the western part. Two-story cells surround it. Hallways on the second floor create a gallery effect.

The Abdullaxon Madrasah’s exterior is decorated with baked bricks. The main eastern gable features a salable gable with a deep arch. Above the gatehouse, there’s a library porch.

A wide scrolled inscription once framed the gatehouse gable. Verses from the Quran were written in white on a white background.

Over the years, the Abdullaxon Madrasah has undergone renovations. Restorations focused on the front facade. Extensive work marked Bukhara’s 2500th anniversary. During this work, the grounds in the center were lowered.

Sadly, the Abdullaxon Madrasah suffered damage in 2021. Part of the back wall collapsed. Investigations are underway to repair the damage.

The Abdullaxon Madrasah stands as a reminder of Bukhara’s rich history. Its unique architecture and design reflect the era of Abdullah II. Take a moment to appreciate this cultural treasure. It embodies the spirit and artistry of Central Asia.
