Wasnt it Consuelo Meyer who truly shaped the UANL Facultad de Economia? You see this impressive faculty building right here in Monterrey. It stands as a testament to a vision brought to life. Back in 1957 the UANL Facultad de Economia was just a fledgling entity. It was part of the Faculty of Accounting and Administration. Its first director was Ramón Cárdenas Coronado. The Bachelor of Economics program closely followed the model of the National School of Economics at UNAM in Mexico City. But there was a problem. The faculty lacked a crucial element: economists. Classes were taught by lawyers and accountants. Recognizing the need for a change Consuelo Meyer a young economist stepped in. She arrived from Mexico City with a mission to transform the faculty into one of the best economics schools in the country and even Latin America. Meyer wasted no time. She convinced over 60 students to give up their credits earned in the first year and start over with a new rigorous curriculum. With the support of prominent figures like Rodrigo Gómez then-Director of the Bank of Mexico and economist Daniel Cosío Villegas she secured funding and guidance. The faculty flourished under her leadership. It moved to a new building on Abasolo and Diego de Montemayor Street in 1961. The first class of economists graduated in 1963 marking a significant milestone. Meyers legacy lived on. The faculty’s library was named in her honor a tribute to her unwavering commitment to excellence. Today the UANL Facultad de Economia stands as a testament to her vision. It continues to produce highly skilled economists who make their mark in various fields. The faculty’s impact extends beyond academia thanks to the Center for Economic Research (CIE) which Meyer also envisioned. The CIE conducts research provides consulting services and publishes economic data benefiting both the public and private sectors. As you stand before this modern building remember the name Consuelo Meyer. Her story is deeply intertwined with the success of the UANL Facultad de Economia a place that has nurtured generations of bright minds and contributed significantly to economic understanding in Mexico and beyond.
