How does the brain create memories? This question, among many others, is explored within the walls of the Queensland Brain Institute, right here on the University of Queensland’s St Lucia campus. The Queensland Brain Institute, or QBI, isn’t just another building. It’s a hub of cutting-edge neuroscience research, a place where scientists delve into the complexities of the human brain. Established in 2003 by Professor Perry Bartlett, the QBI was built with the vision of understanding the brain, in sickness and in health. The official opening by Premier Anna Bligh in 2007 marked the beginning of a new era in Australian neuroscience. The Queensland Brain Institute is one of nine specialist research institutes at the University of Queensland. It’s in good company, alongside institutions like the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology and the Institute for Molecular Bioscience. The QBI’s research covers a broad spectrum, from cognition and behavior to ageing and dementia. Within its walls, over 400 staff and students work tirelessly, driven by a desire to unravel the mysteries of the mind. The Queensland Brain Institute isn’t just about research. It also houses several specialized centers. The Science of Learning Research Centre, the Clem Jones Centre for Ageing Dementia Research, and the Asia-Pacific Centre for Neuromodulation are just a few examples. Each center focuses on a specific area, contributing to the QBI’s overall mission. Did you know that QBI researchers have published over 5,000 papers? Their discoveries, from the effects of high-intensity exercise on brain function to the potential of ultrasound therapy for Alzheimer’s, are making waves in the scientific community. The Queensland Brain Institute stands as a testament to human curiosity. It’s a place where groundbreaking research is conducted, shaping our understanding of the most complex organ in the human body. As you stand here, consider the countless hours of work, the innovative ideas, and the unwavering dedication within these walls. The Queensland Brain Institute continues to push the boundaries of neuroscience, offering hope for a healthier future.
