Hidden behind these walls lies a story that spans centuries, a tale woven into the very fabric of Villa Corsi Salviati. Imagine stepping back in time to the year 1502. Simone di Jacopo Corsi, a man of discerning taste, purchased a “farmhouse in the village of San Martino a Sesto.” This was no ordinary farmhouse; it was the seed from which Villa Corsi Salviati would blossom. A luneta, attributed to Bernardino Poccetti, provides a glimpse into the villa’s early days. It reveals a charming two-story structure with a grand altana, a dovecote, and a loggia gracing the first floor. The Italian garden, in its infancy, already boasted rectangular flowerbeds and a central basin, hinting at the grandeur to come. As the decades melted into centuries, so too did Villa Corsi Salviati evolve. In the mid-17th century, the Corsi brothers, Giovanni and Lorenzo, commissioned an ambitious expansion. Gherardo Silvani, a renowned architect of the era, was entrusted to reshape the villa, leaving an indelible mark on its design. Sadly, the frescoes by Baccio del Bianco, another artistic genius of the time, have since been lost to the passage of time. The 18th century ushered in a golden age for Villa Corsi Salviati. Extensive renovations transformed the villa into the architectural masterpiece we see today. Elaborate stucco adornments graced the facades, while four majestic towers, each crowned with loggias and adorned with statues, pinnacles, and urns, rose at each corner. The renovations instilled a sense of symmetry and grandeur, reminiscent of the opulent Roman Baroque style. The gardens, too, underwent a magnificent metamorphosis. A sophisticated water system was implemented, breathing life into new fountains and enhancing existing ones. The formal Italian garden was redefined with a more intricate design. Instead of the previous rectangular layout, a series of triangular flowerbeds lined the sides, converging on a central circular basin, all meticulously bordered with boxwood hedges. Near the entrance, two oval basins were encircled by concentric flowerbeds, adding another layer of visual depth to the landscape. Today, as you stand before Villa Corsi Salviati, let your imagination paint a vivid picture of its fascinating past. Envision the grand parties that must have taken place within its walls, the laughter and conversations echoing through the gardens. Remember the legacy of the Corsi family and the countless hands that have shaped and nurtured this remarkable estate over the centuries. Villa Corsi Salviati stands not just as a testament to architectural brilliance and horticultural artistry, but as a living testament to the enduring spirit of history itself.
