Can a park have a past life? Parque Marginal da Areia Preta certainly does. This waterfront park, stretching along Areia Preta district in Macau, wasn’t always a place of leisure. It began as an unplanned embankment, built out of necessity during the construction of a road leading to the airport. Imagine the noise, the dust, the heavy machinery transforming this coastline. Later, the Macau government, recognizing the potential of this space, decided to transform it. They enlisted Portuguese architect Francisco Caldeira Cabral to design what we now know as Parque Marginal da Areia Preta. The park officially opened on March 14, 1999. Parque Marginal da Areia Preta quickly became a beloved spot for locals. They came here to exercise, relax, and fish. This expansive park, covering 13,706 square meters, offers something for everyone. A thousand-meter-long promenade stretches along the waterfront, providing stunning views. The park has two levels. The upper level runs slightly above the adjacent road, offering a unique perspective. A gentle slope leads down to the lower level, where a crushed stone pathway meanders along the water’s edge. Imagine strolling along this path, the sea breeze in your hair, the sound of the waves a calming backdrop. Parque Marginal da Areia Preta features pavilions, benches, and gazebos, providing ample space to rest and enjoy the scenery. Three small open-air plazas offer space for gatherings and events. A footbridge connects the park to the adjacent Areia Preta Park and Lotus Flower Garden, creating a continuous green space. More recently, in October 2019, Parque Marginal da Areia Preta underwent further expansion. A new section of promenade and a 650-meter pedestrian walkway were added. This new addition extends from the Oriental Pearl to the Friendship Bridge, offering even more opportunities to enjoy the waterfront. Parque Marginal da Areia Preta stands as a testament to the power of transformation, a place where necessity became beauty, where industry gave way to tranquility.
