This church in the heart of Madrid’s Vicálvaro district is more than just a building. It’s a living story etched in stone and brick.
The Parroquia Santa Maria de la Antigua is a significant landmark. It boasts a rich history stretching back to at least 1427. That’s when the first documented mention of the parish appeared. Originally known as Santa Maria la Mayor its name changed centuries later to its current form. The current Baroque-style structure however dates back to the late 16th and early 17th centuries. King Felipe II himself ordered its expansion in 1592.
The church’s construction was a journey spanning decades. Architects Francisco de Mora Diego Sillero and Luis de Luzón all contributed to its design and evolution. Even Gaspar Ordóñez played a part altering the design of the tribune. The construction shows two distinct phases clearly visible on the facade. Notice the different brickwork the use of stone and the unfinished look near the top. The planned slate spire was never completed.
Tragedy struck during the Spanish Civil War of 1936. The church was sacked. Its precious artwork including the 17th-century altarpiece and a 1760 organ were destroyed. Even the bells were thrown down. Yet miraculously a bomb landed near the church but failed to detonate. Locals attribute this survival to the devotion they hold for their patron saint the Virgin of the Antigua.
After the war the rebuilding process began. It was a slow and arduous task. Father Jesús Copa Mota led much of the restoration in the late 20th century. He oversaw the creation of a new altarpiece very similar to the original and the installation of a new organ in 2013. This organ boasts 1386 pipes. It mirrors the one destroyed in 1936.
The Parroquia Santa Maria de la Antigua isn’t just a place of worship. It’s also home to a day center for the elderly named after Cardinal Tarancón. It also houses a replica of the Virgin of the Pilar a testament to the building’s enduring significance.
