“Continue the life of Christ.” That was the desire of a small group. It led to the founding of Saint Matthew Baptist Church. They met in 1929 in Sister Rosie Breaux’s yard.
Saint Matthew Baptist Church started with humble beginnings. It now stands as a beacon of faith in Houston. The story of Saint Matthew Baptist Church is one of perseverance. It is also a story of growth.
In 1929, Reverend M. E. Roberson led the church’s organization. Just two years later, Reverend E. S. Branch became the pastor. Several ministers followed. They each contributed to the church’s development.
Reverend T. J. Anderson arrived in 1945. Under his guidance, the church built a new building in 1949. Sister Annie Richmond sponsored the first building fund. Deacon Eddie T. Jones provided the design. His inspiration shaped the church’s physical presence.
Reverend Cecil M. Davis, Sr. took over in 1955. A new edifice was constructed under his leadership. In April 1970, the congregation marched to their new home. They sang “We’ve Come This Far By Faith.” The old church became a fellowship hall. The mortgage was paid off in 1979. It coincided with the church’s 50th anniversary.
Reverend Leroy Lacy, Jr. became pastor in 1992. He brought new energy and vision. Ministries and programs were introduced. These included New Member Orientation and Kingdom Builder Educational Ministry. The latter provided scholarships. It encouraged youth to pursue academic excellence. Children’s Church, a nursery, and a food pantry also started. The church purchased surrounding land. They expanded parking and renovated the Sanctuary.
January 1999 marked a milestone. Reverend Leroy Lacy, Jr. became the first full-time pastor. He improved financial systems and established budgets. He also planned a Family Life Center.
In January 2003, the church faced an unexpected challenge. The building needed complete renovation. For six months, the congregation could not worship in their church. The edifice was remodeled with many improvements.
March 2007 saw Pastor Lacy’s vision come to life. The Leroy Lacy, Jr. Family Life Center was built. It provided space for various activities. Classrooms were dedicated to honor key members. The multipurpose room was named after Rev. Cecil M. Davis, Sr.
More than eighty years have passed since Saint Matthew Baptist Church began. It has weathered storms and overcome challenges. It stands today as a testament to faith. Saint Matthew continues to thrive. It is a vibrant part of the Houston community.
