Eastwood Academy has been recognized as an “exemplary” high school by the Texas Education Agency since 2008. It’s a testament to the power of education to uplift and inspire. Eastwood Academy began its life in 1954, not as a school, but as a Baptist church. The Houston Independent School District acquired the property in 2001. They transformed the 22,000-square-foot building into a place of learning. Imagine the echoes of sermons replaced by the lively discussions of students. The building now houses administrative offices, a library, a cafeteria, and classrooms. It also boasts science and computer labs. There’s even a multi-purpose room with a stage. Eastwood Academy is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place where students, primarily of Mexican and Central American descent, many from low-income backgrounds, are empowered to dream big. It’s a college prep school raising the bar for inner-city students throughout Houston. Here, students can challenge themselves with Advanced Placement and Dual-Credit courses. They can explore subjects ranging from Calculus to Art History. They’re even encouraged to self-study for AP exams not offered as classes. Eastwood Academy is a small school. Yet, it makes a big impact. In 2006, the school actively sought grants and donations. They aimed to equip students with the latest technology despite limited government funding for smaller schools. Even transportation tells a story. Back in 2006, most students walked or biked to school. There were no school bus services. This speaks to the dedication and commitment of the students and their families. Eastwood Academy boasts a near-perfect graduation rate, close to 99.7% over the past seven years. And an astonishing 100% of graduates have been accepted to college since 2007. Eastwood Academy is a testament to the power of community, the dedication of educators, and the potential within every student. It’s a place where it’s truly “cool to be smart.”
