“Smell that fresh fish?” Giorgio chuckled, pointing towards an empty space. “You might not see baskets overflowing with glistening trout and silvery eels today, but this, my friends, is the legacy of the Loggia del Pesce!” The Loggia del Pesce, a graceful structure of arches and columns, now stands in Piazza dei Ciompi. But its story begins in the heart of Florence’s bustling market scene. In 1568, Duke Cosimo I envisioned a dedicated space for the city’s fishmongers, who had been displaced by the grand Vasari Corridor. He commissioned Giorgio Vasari himself to design the loggia. Imagine, a flurry of activity beneath these very arches! Fishmongers hawked their catch of the day, the air thick with the scent of the sea. Each arch was adorned with roundels depicting various fish species, a charming reminder of the loggia’s purpose. However, the Loggia’s journey was far from over. During Florence’s modernization in the 19th century, it was dismantled, its pieces carefully stored away. It was like a disassembled puzzle, waiting to be put back together. That moment arrived in 1955. Like a phoenix rising, the Loggia del Pesce was meticulously reconstructed in Piazza dei Ciompi using many of its original materials, including the fish roundels and even the coats of arms. Although it no longer echoes with the shouts of fishmongers, the Loggia del Pesce remains a testament to Florence’s vibrant past, its elegant arches whispering tales of a time when the aroma of the sea wafted through the city’s heart.
