Did you know the name Redford itself speaks volumes about this township’s history? Redford Charter Township isn’t just a place it’s a story etched into the landscape. Its origins go back to 1827 when it was part of Springwells and Bucklin Townships. Bucklin was later split into Nankin and Pekin. Pekin’s transformation into Redford in 1833 is quite interesting. The name wasn’t random. It commemorates the point where Native Americans and European settlers crossed the Rouge River. “Rouge” is French for “red” hence Redford.

Redford Charter Township has a unique identity. It’s an inner-ring suburb of Detroit. It sits about 15 miles northwest of Detroit’s downtown. The township initially stretched all the way to Greenfield Road. However parts were annexed by Detroit in the 1920s. The annexation stopped in 1926 when Redford gained “charter” status from the Michigan legislature. This granted Redford a level of autonomy. It allowed Redford to govern itself independently from Detroit.

Imagine the River Rouge flowing through Lola Valley Park. Picture Ashcroft Creek and Tarabusi Creek adding to Redford’s natural beauty. These are branches of the Rouge River. They contribute to the character of the township. Redford Charter Township also boasts 15 parks. These parks offer various recreational facilities. There are splash parks skate parks and ball diamonds. The parks also have walking paths for those who prefer a quiet stroll.

Redford’s demographics have changed significantly over time. In 2020 the population was 49504. There has been significant growth since 1930 when the population was only 3834. The African-American population notably increased by about 200% between 2000 and 2010. The overall population of the township declined by 6% during the same period. This shift reflects the diverse tapestry of Redford Charter Township. This unique blend makes Redford a fascinating place to explore.
