How much history can one building hold? Right here, in the heart of Florence, stands the Chiesa evangelica metodista. This church, my friends, has seen more than its fair share of changes over the centuries.

The Chiesa evangelica metodista wasn’t always a Methodist church. It stands on the foundation of the ancient Roman Catholic church of San Jacopo tra i Fossi. Imagine, a church dating back to the 12th century! Originally, this sacred space was home to Vallombrosian monks. These monks, devoted to a life of contemplation and prayer, resided here until 1543.

Then, the tides of history shifted. The church was transferred to the Augustinian order, loyal to Cosimo I. They, in turn, rebuilt the church in the 17th century, leaving their mark on this hallowed ground. The Chiesa evangelica metodista as we see it today is a testament to their architectural prowess.

But the story doesn’t end there. In 1808, the church and its adjacent convent were suppressed, their treasures dispersed. Yet, from this seeming end, a new beginning arose. In 1874, the church found new purpose thanks to Scottish missionary John R. MacDougall. He ushered in the era of the Methodist congregation, making the Chiesa evangelica metodista a beacon of the Methodist faith in Florence.

Even today, the spirit of change lives on within the Chiesa evangelica metodista. As of 2013, the pastor of the Waldensian Church of Florence cares for this historic building. It serves as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the ever-evolving tapestry of this remarkable city.
