Whispers of ancient chants echo through the ages here at Lingyan Temple. Can you hear them? Lingyan Temple, also known as the Temple of the Soul Cliff, rests on the southern slope of Lingyan Mountain in Dujiangyan City, Chengdu. This temple, steeped in history, holds a significant place in Chinese culture. Lingyan Temple traces its origins back to the Jin Dynasty. Over the centuries, it has been meticulously restored during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The main hall and clock tower that you see today date back to the Qing Dynasty. A captivating structure stands beside Lingyan Temple. The Thousand Buddha Pagoda, a stone-carved masterpiece, dates back to the Tang Dynasty. It rises three meters tall, its thirteen tiers adorned with countless Buddha statues. At its peak sits a unique iron-cast statue of Vairocana Buddha. Interestingly, this statue’s style differs from the others, suggesting it may have been added later. Lingyan Temple was recognized for its importance in 1991. It was designated as a provincial-level cultural relic protection site. Later, in 2013, its status was elevated to a National Key Cultural Relic Protection site. This acknowledges Lingyan Temple’s significance in China’s rich tapestry of history and culture.
