A simple house? That’s what many thought when they first saw Santa Maria Ausiliatrice. This unassuming church in Milan’s Ronchetto sul Naviglio neighborhood is far from ordinary. It stands as a testament to architect Arrigo Arrighetti’s vision. A vision for a modern church designed for the people of today and tomorrow.

Santa Maria Ausiliatrice is more than just a place of worship. It’s a community center. It was conceived for the 1975 Holy Year. The church’s design reflects this intention. It houses not only a chapel but also assembly halls and outdoor meeting areas. Even residences for priests are part of the complex.

Arrighetti’s design is strikingly minimalist. Forget soaring spires and ornate facades. The church is intentionally unpretentious. Some initially mistook it for a supermarket. The building’s rectangular shape is simple. Its main entrance is subtly angled toward the street. Another entrance is on the eastern side.

The exterior is clad in Lombardy stone. The joints are almost invisible. This creates a smooth uninterrupted wall. Three small oblique windows punctuate the walls. One is on the main front. Two are on the opposite side. The roof is finished in copper.

Step inside Santa Maria Ausiliatrice. Notice the oblique opening near the side entrance. It floods the altar with natural light. This creates a dramatic effect on the abstract colored composition behind it. Other openings in the ceiling also let in natural light.

Look to the right. You’ll see a large cylinder. It descends from the ceiling above the baptistery. A beam of light focuses on the baptistery below. This creates a truly stunning visual impact.

An addition to the church was made in 2008. This is an assembly hall. It features a raised portico. Slender columns support an overhanging roof. Some may find this addition less aesthetically pleasing than the original structure.

Yet Santa Maria Ausiliatrice remains a significant structure. It’s a unique blend of functionality and simplicity. This church successfully integrates into its surroundings. Its unassuming exterior belies a spiritually rich and thoughtfully designed interior. Santa Maria Ausiliatrice is a testament to faith expressed in a remarkably modern way. It is a hidden gem worth discovering.
